Vertical Specialization and Industry Structure in High Technology Industries

چکیده
We examine the evolution of vertical specialization in three industries: chemicals, computers, and semiconductors. Vertical specialization is the restructuring of industry-wide value chains, such that different stages of the development, production, and marketing processes are controlled by different firms, rather than being vertically integrated within the boundaries of individual firms. In some cases, vertical specialization may span international boundaries and is associated with complex international production networks. After decades of vertical specialization, firms in the chemical industry appears to be re-integrating stages of the value chain. By contrast, the semiconductor and computer industries have experienced significant vertical specialization during the past ten years. We examine how and why these contrasting trends in vertical specialization have coevolved with industry maturation and decline, and underscore the importance and role of both industry factors and business strategies necessary for This research was supported in part from funding from The Alfred P. The Dynamic Limits of Specialization: Vertical Integration Reconsidered
Existing studies, largely based in transaction cost economics, approach the issue of vertical scope as the decision of the individual firm about whether to make or buy, given the set of existing markets and well defined vertical segments. However, recent research has shown that the ability to make or buy should not be taken for granted. We argue that this applies not only to dis-integration, bu...
متن کاملThe Evolution of Vertical IS Standards: Electronic Interchange Standards in the US Home Mortgage Industry
In contrast to horizontal IT standards, which concern the characteristics of IT products and apply to users in many industries, vertical IS standards focus on data structures and definitions, document formats, and business processes and address business problems unique to particular industries. This paper contributes to the small but important literature on vertical IS standards by presenting t...

This paper considers the argument of Marshall that concentration of industry at a single location allows for a ner division of labor in the industry than would be possible if the industry were di used over a wide area. I use Census data on manufacturing plants to examine the relationship between localization of industry and vertical disintegration. I nd that establishments located near other es...

A HISTORY-FRIENDLY MODEL OF THE CO-EVOLUTION OF THE COMPUTER AND SEMICONDUCTORS INDUSTRIES: CAPABILITIES AND TECHNICAL CHANGE AS DETERMINANTS OF THE VERTICAL SCOPE OF FIRMS IN RELATED INDUSTRIES by Franco Malerba, Richard Nelson, Luigi Orsenigo and Sidney Winter In this paper we present a history-friendly model of the evolution of the computer and semiconductor industries, focusing on the deter...
متن کاملThe Limits of the Market: Vertical Re-integration, Explained
Drawing from archival and qualitative data from the UK building construction industry, we develop an inductive framework that explains why industries gravitate for long periods around vertical specialization; and how and why they shift from specialization to reintegration. First, we observe that various industry groups, including professionals and their associations, play an active role in shap...
